Seeing that neither he nor Basina are making any progress in figuring out the crystals, Gorokum picks up a stone from the ground and tosses it into the middle of the portal to see what happens.

The rock disappears into the portal, making a vwoop sound going into it
Just as you were about to enter the portal, a trio of adventurers show up in the backyard. The first is a half-elf drow, the second a hill dwarf, and the last a shifter.
Gorokum keeps his staff on the ground in front of him and loosely rests his hand on the hilt of his longsword while gauging the intentions of the newly arrived trio.
"Greetings to you three," he says with formal sincerity. If nothing else, hobgoblins prided themselves on their politeness. That is until they are insulted. "What brings you to this portal?"
Thoradin's grimaced. Just his luck getting involved with a goblin of all people. And was that halfling wearing chainmail...? "Well, you know, we were just in the area to do some shopping and we thought this was the store that sold those delicious pastries... what the heck do you think we're here for? Feh..." He let the warhammer he was holding rest on the ground at his feet, head down, and leaned on the hilt. "Name's Thoradin, of the clan Thunderhammer. Seems we're all here for the same reason. Be wise to work together, then."
The half-drow shifts his eyes between the five others, including the two with him. He has medium-short whitish hair and gray skin, and wears a cloak with the hood currently down, alongside a concerned expression as he stares at the portal. Mounted to his backpack is a crossbow. He speaks with a quiet tone.
"Something like that, yeah. Thought it'd be worth checking out... and I suppose having the six of us would be safer when we cross over... if you don't mind, of course."
"I'm... uh, Mal'thrae. Good to meet you." he replies to the hobgoblin.
“I see no wisdom in working with one such as you,” Gorokum replies. “If you can not manage basic courtesy what else are you too undisciplined to handle?”
He gave a short chuckle in response. "Heh. I think you'll find me plenty disciplined enough when it's called for, oh nameless adventurer. You're a peculiar lot, though, you'll surely grant."
Basina knows that Gorokum has a temper when it comes to rudeness and the dwarf was a bit rough around the edges. But they did have more pressing matters to do than fight with other adventurers.
”Master dwarf, it would be advantageous for us to work together. But if you could keep the sarcasm to a minimum we may all come out of this with all our limbs attached to the correct place” she said to the dwarf as she lowered her silvered morningstar. “Nice and civil makes for a good companion”

Gorokum turns his attention to the half-drow, already dismissing the dwarf from his mind.
“Greetings Mal’thrae,” he says. “I am Gorokum of the Red Claw, sometimes called Gorokum the Mad. My people have fought a community of drow for many years, though we have a truce now, or at least we did when I set out on this misadventure. Smart, ruthless warriors, the drow. They have our respect.”
He turns back to the portal.
”The hope is that there is another key on the other side of this portal. Five of these keys and we’ve been told we may be able to find a Ruby of Light. It may help in the fight against the darkness that threatens this land and those around it.”
He removes his hand from his sword hilt and offers it to Mal’thrae.
“My name my good sir is Basina Fairfoot, paladin from the capital. My friends are Gorokum, a mighty warrior wizard and the cleric we don’t know. He chooses the silent life. But I would not go into battle without him.” Basina said with a slight bow.

"Well, now we're getting somewhere!" He'd dismissed the hobgoblin as well - too thin skinned to amount to much - and turned his full attention to Basina. "Good to meet ya. Paladin, huh. First time I've ever met a halfling paladin, but good! Me, I'm a humble servant of tempest itself. Well... part time. Mostly I just smack monsters around with this hammer when I'm not pumping them full of electric shock."
”Our source told us that one of the charms we need are in there as my friend said” Basina says and nods towards the portal. “The thing is that we only have 24 hours to get in, find it and get out. If we’re not out by then we will be turned int creatures and stuck in there”

A fate i wish no one. I know what its like. Mindlesness, confusion no controll over your thoughts. But the rubys clensing light touched me. You can call me Simen. The shifter could be mistaken for a human at first glance, and only on a second look you'd see the bestial features: skin thicker than regular human skin, small claws on the finger tips, scruffy hair and a yellow shimmer in his eyes. Its great to make your aquaintances, and i do not wish to be impolite, but should we not retrieve the charm?
Basina will check the portal itself for any clue why the crystals are spreading.
Investigation: 4
As that was a nat 1 Basina will use her luck to reroll: 18

Still no clues to why they're spreading
Seeing that neither he nor Basina are making any progress in figuring out the crystals, Gorokum picks up a stone from the ground and tosses it into the middle of the portal to see what happens.

”No point standing around” Basina says, grabs her morningstar tight in one hand and follows the rock.

Basina change her mind last second and instead of going trough the portal she turns to the newcomers and glance towards Gorokum and Jadyn.

Thoradin restrained himself from rolling his eyes. "Aye, aye, I'm rightly rebuked. Now may we have your names? Please, and thank you."
Gorokum turns his attention to the half-drow, already dismissing the dwarf from his mind.

Mal'thrae extends his hand to meet Gorokum's.
"Ruby of light, interesting. Should give us a fighting chance, yeah."
He nods to Basina as well. "Pleasure to meet you and the clergyman with you as well."
