I brought it up because of the wildshape implications. But hey we lose crag cat but get a handful of new awesome wildshapes including a spermwale...which i am looking forward to dropping from orbit.
I’ve house ruled that Circle of the Moon Druids can wild shape into a subset of natural-ish monstrosities when they get their elemental shape ability...it also takes 2 wild shape uses.

Sperm whale's a CR 8 critter. Not even a 20th level Moon Druid can wildshape into that. But you can be a giant walrus.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Yeah, i realized that today for some reason i thought it was cr 6. Its a shame because that would have been a great new wildshape. Looks like ill have just have to polymorph into one.
Why did they change Crag cats to monstrosity ? Was there any particular reason? was it over powered or didn't make sense lore wise?

Just replying to say this made me super sad! I made a goliath druid for my Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign and was so excited when I saw Crag Cat listed as a beast on a D&D site! Then it was updated recently and was so sad. It was a perfect fit for my Goliath druid who grew up in the mountains of the north, given that they "[prefer] ledges and cliffs in the mountains." And their coats turn white in the Winter -- honestly the spell reflect was cool, but I really was interested in the RP reasons for having this form. I would have even preferred if they upped its CR to 2 or something, so that Moon Druids got it at 6th level instead of second.
Thanks for reading!
I have edited as I found that this doesn't seem to be consistent. A Young Winter Wolf (CR 1) is classified as a beast, but a Normal Winter Wolf is classified as a Monstrosity. Granted, they're in different books, but that is relevant!
A young winter wolf also has more AC than a full grown Winter Wolf, which is odd, too.
Young Winter Wolf: Large Beast, AC 14, 37 HP, Keen hearing and Smell, Pack Tactics, Bite (TftYP)
Winter Wolf: Large Monstrosity, AC 13, 75 HP, Keen Hearing and Smell, Pack Tactics, Snow Camouflage, Bite, Cold Breath (MM)
Crag cat has been updated and is now a monstrosity per Icewind. Discuss
Just jumping in to confirm that this is correct and is intentional errata from Wizards of the Coast.

It probably never should have been a beast, but I'm still disappointed that it's gone. Big Magic Kitty :(

Same, I feel like druids could use a few decent low cr beasts like the crag cat for later levels.

It's got supernatural abilities and an intelligence score that's abnormally high for a beast.
