Hello all reading this I just had a couple questions about starting D&D. Me and some of my friends decided to play but we don't know where to start or how to start. I'd just like to know what books we'd need mainly.
I would say that you would probably need the D&D Basic Rules SRD. This contains what you need to create your own adventures (how to build a character, monster statistics, magic items, NPC statistics).
Devious serpent folk devoid of compassion, yuan-ti manipulate other creatures by arousing their doubts, evoking their fears, and elevating and crushing their hopes. From remote temples in jungles, swamps, and deserts, the yuan-ti plot to supplant and dominate all other races and to make themselves gods.
i've been playing campaigns for awhile now, and i haven't bought anything apart from the starter set. it gives you some basic rules, a full campaign (with some very nice maps and monster details!), and everything the DM needs to run without any experience. there's character sheets if you don't want to create your own, dice, and un-filled sheets as well. you can use the internet and this website to make your own characters, and always ask back here if you need anything else. feel free to just ask google whenever you're confused when starting out.
the starter set is a basic building block. i would always get that first if you're thinking of starting your own game. it's what me and my group did, and we've come out fine.
For starting out, definitely the Starter Set for whoever is going to be running the campaign. For the players, a pencil, a notepad, and a set of polyhedral dice that they can roll with (they could use a dice rolling app on their phone but man I love dice!).
I'd also recommend having at least one copy of the Player's Handbook for everyone to share. It seems very daunting at first, and I recently had a new player tell me they didn't have time to learn all of the rules, and asked what they should focus their little time on. I told them they should focus on these things:
1) Know your character sheet. Know what all of the values mean, how they are derived (you should know this by building your character), and how to use them.
2) Know how to roll for everything you need on your character sheet. That includes ability checks, saving throws, weapon/spell attacks, and damage rolls.
3) Know the rule for any ability that is specific to the class/race you've chosen. For example, if you are a Rogue and you see you can "dash as a bonus action", know what Dash does and know what a bonus action is.
Everything else will come with time (both at the table and away). If everyone is new, everyone should be accepting of the time it takes to look stuff up and learn.
You can also run with pre-built characters, but #1 above becomes that much more important to figure out. And at that point you might as well have rolled your own character.
only the dm needs the starter set. its nice for the players to each have their own dice, but you can get by with just what comes in the starter set. the starter set campaign is really fun to play, I hope you enjoy it!

Thank you. Anything else?

Thank you I'll look into getting it and trying it out. Is it just the DM who needs dice and start set or everyone?
Thank you also this is really helpful and I'll have to tell this to my friends. I'd really like to play it's always been a happy thought of mine.
