I'm running TOA and the party is currently being accompanied both by the guide Musharib and by Xandala. Social interaction and really engaging in a role are my weaknesses in D&D. Without meaning to, I tend to run things as if the NPCs aren't even present except during combat.
Any tips on how I can both remember to include them more in the story and on how to do that well? At this point, I want to stick to mostly 3rd person narration. I tend to freeze up when I try to do 1st person narration.
Just become the character, think about how they would act and just go with it. I try and take from stuff I have seen. I have an old wizard like Merlin from “sword in the stone”, a Ranger like Robin Hood, and a guy that talked like captain jack sparrow but was a fighter.
Npcs don’t really have to talk to much unless it is to further the story. There are times when you will have to swap between 1st and 3rd person.
That is it though, just get into your npcs heads and act like them. DMing is a mix of storytelling, acting, and being a tactician.
