Are you having a hard time finding content in the D&D Beyond character creator? Well, worry not! Here is a consolidated list of the most common questions we ask and their answers to be able to troubleshoot your issue without needing to wait for someone to respond to your forum post asking for help. If this helped, please give it a 'Like' via the up arrow at the bottom of the post.
2) I bought the cheaper version. In addition to being able to read the books on D&D Beyond you need to buy the digital tools. There is an option for ‘Compendium Only’ content with each book purchase that is usually ⅔ the cost of the whole book. That content does NOT give you access to the digital tools usable in the character builder but does give you access to read the book. If you only own the compendium content you'll need to buy the integrated tools to be able to use that content on the character sheet. The best way to check this is to go to the market page for the book and see if you have a checkmark next to any of the content aside from what is labeled 'Compendium Only' at the bottom of the page. The cost of any individual part of a book gets reduced from the cost of the whole book, so if you did buy the compendium content the cost of it would count as credit toward the purchase of the book, so you won't be buying it again if you bought the digital tools through the purchase of the entire book.
3) I bought the digital tools on D&D Beyond, but still don’t have access to it. Check to make sure that you are logged into the correct account. It's easy to accidentally have more than one account because of the varying ways to log into the website. If you do find that you have more than one account, you should open a support ticket to get them merged by clicking here or via the ‘Help Portal’ link at the bottom of the page. If you are in the correct account and still have this issue, move to the “I own/have shared with me the content but still can’t use it” section.
B) Did someone else buy the content and share it with you?
1) I don’t/sometimes have access to the stuff. The content on D&D Beyond is shared with a campaign, not you specifically as a player. You need to be making the character within the campaign to be able to have access to the tools if they are being shared with you. The same thing goes for homebrew made by other people.
2) I’m in the campaign and still can't use the tools. Content sharing needs to be enabled within the campaign by someone with a master tier subscription. This person does not need to be the DM, just as long as someone has content sharing enabled everyone's content will be shared throughout the campaign. If you don't see it say 'Content sharing enabled by USERNAME' than content sharing is not enabled withing that campaign.
3) Content sharing can’t be enabled. Only someone with a master tier subscription can share their content and you are only able to share content with five campaigns at a time. If the person with the master subscription already has five campaigns that they are sharing content with they will have to disable sharing with one of them to enable it with a different one. Find out more information about subscriptions here.
4) Content sharing is enabled, but I still don't have access to the stuff. Move to the next section.
C) I own/have shared with me the content but still can't use it.
1) Do you have the content toggled for your character sheet? Make sure that the slider is red (to the right) to have the content enabled. Linked here is an article written by the staff of D&D Beyond about how the sliders work and what each slider actually enables. It is important to note that content is toggled based on the book it originally came out in, and not necessarily the book purchased from. This is important with much of the content from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything that was originally published in the varying Magic the Gathering books. Again, see the article about it linked above.
.
2) Make sure that you and your players have their entitlements in sync. You can go here to ensure that all content you should have access to is being properly mapped to your account. If you don't want to follow the link you can go to the drop-down menu that pops up when you hover on your username at the top right of the page and click Account->Marketplace. You should see a section near the top labeled ‘Account Entitlements’ that will tell you to sync your entitlements or that your entitlements are in sync.
3) Make sure you bought the player option, not the monster. If you bought something specific from a book it's important to know if you bought the player race or the monster. There are several player races that are also monsters, and it's easy to accidentally buy the Changeling Monster and not the Changeling Race as an example.
4) Do you meet the prerequisites? There are prerequisites for many of the mechanics in D&D that are toggleable on the first page of the character sheet with the other toggles. If it’s toggled on (Red/to the right) then you need to meet the prerequisites to be able to use the content. You can always disable the toggle for prerequisites and see if the content reveals itself.
5) I bought it through the App. The connection between the app and the character builder often takes time to update. Since the payment has to go through the app store and then to D&D Beyond there is an entire other system that needs to get checked and verified before the content will show up. D&D Beyond doesn't get the information regarding your purchase until it has gone through the app store. If you find yourself having issues with the app, you should open a support ticket by clicking here or via the ‘Help Portal’ link at the bottom of the page and reach out to the app store you made your purchase through for more information regarding your purchase.
6) Force the system to update. Sometimes the system is finicky. You may have to “wake up” your character sheet to force it to update its cache. Add and remove Inspiration or equipment and refresh the browser page. You can also try having the person with the subscription toggle content sharing off and on again. If that doesn't work try using a different device/browser to look at the content. If the content was recently purchased or it is homebrew that was recently updated it can take a bit of time for the content to become available to you because of server update latency, usually 15-20 minutes.
D) I’m having an issue you didn’t mention.
1) I can’t add something to my character sheet. Adding things to the character sheet can be confusing. If you are trying to add equipment make sure that you are in the ‘Inventory’ -> ‘Manage Inventory’ section of the character sheet and have the appropriate toggles to find what you are looking for (Proficient, Common, Magical, Container) and the appropriate type of equipment selected (Armor, Potion, Ring, etc.) If you are trying to add a Feat make sure you are in the ‘Features and Traits’ -> Feats -> Manage Feats Section of the sheet. It is the same thing with Spells if you are able to cast spells you’ll have a ‘Spells’ -> ‘Manage Spells’. Finally, there is the Extras Tab where all of your other miscellaneous things will be located, such as pets. To add things here click ‘Extras’ -> ‘Manage Extras’ and add whatever you are looking for. An important caveat to this is there are some items/feats that are not currently and/or properly implemented on D&D Beyond due to the way the system is set up. These things are much more common in the newer* books, specifically the Strixhaven book. *As of 5/29/22
2) I can’t add a subclass/am missing a subclass feature. First, make sure that you are at the appropriate level to get a subclass or the corresponding feature. That information will vary based on class but you can find it in the class descriptions, the list of which is linked here. If you are at the correct level but still don’t have something you are supposed to, you may be using an incorrectly mapped and/or unfinished homebrew version of whatever it is without knowing. Double-check with your DM and others in your group about if you are using homebrew they might have made. Please note that multiclassing changes the way that your character will develop as well and check up on your class's specific multiclassing rules.
3) I leveled up but I didn’t get any new features. When you level up D&D Beyond doesn't automatically select a new level for you. The system has no way of knowing what class you’d be leveling or if you’d want to multiclass so you will need to back into the character sheet editor (via the anvil at the top of the sheet) and manually add the level to the class you want to level in.
4) I have something I shouldn’t have. When this happens it's usually due to someone having something homebrew in your campaign that is forcing its way onto your character. When you click on whatever you have as extra and it's blue or says ‘Version’ that means it's homebrew or an override on your character sheet. Ask your group if someone knows about whatever is forcing its way onto your character sheet and see if they can remove it temporarily. It could also be a remnant from a different version of the character, in which case you’d need to refer to the earlier point Force the System to update.
5) I can’t find the time/gravity (dunamancy) spells from the Critical Role book. This is by design. The spells that are unique to the Chronurgy and Graviturgy Wizard subclasses are ONLY obtainable by those subclasses even if you have critical role content enabled. If you want access to those spells without needing to be those subclasses you’ll need to make a homebrew duplicate of them and add whatever spellcasting class to the list of available classes to learn those spells before they become available to you. Learn how to do that in the Homebrew forums linked above.
6) I can't add Steel Defender or the Drake Companion to my extras. This is by design. These subclasses, and presumably any subclasses with features like this in the future, have their creature companions integrated into their character sheet under features and traits. To the best of my understanding, this is a temporary solution until the team can find something better that scales with the player the way it is supposed to.
7) I can't access legacy versions of things. With the release of Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse (hereafter known as MotM) Volo's Guide to Everything (VGtE) and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes (MToF) have been removed from both physical sale and digital sale on all officially supported platforms. Much of the content published in MotM was a revised version of content published in older books, specifically content within VGtE and MToF. If you did not already own VGtE and/or MToF there is no way for you to get access to the content from those books.* Linked here (https://www.dndbeyond.com/legacy) andhere (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1201-faq-for-mordenkainen-presents-monsters-of-the) are two articles published by the staff at D&D Beyond about Legacy content. *Without having it shared with you via content sharing from someone who already owns it.
If you still want to use the content from VGtE and MToF you can toggle it on (Red/to the right) on the race page. Legacy content will be very viable marked with the tag 'Legacy'.
8) I can't make a character. The character limit is 6 without a subscription. If you have 6 characters you won't be allowed to make another one. This can potentially show you an error of some sort when you would gain an additional character.
9) I don't have all the spell slots I am supposed to have. Spell casting is fairly complicated. Each class has their spell casting progress differently and it is important to read the spell casting section of your class for specifics. Multiclassing changes the way that spell casting works. With multiclassing, you can have spells slots that are higher level than the level of spell that you can actually know. I'll link the rules for Spells with Multiclassinghere. Warlocks also have unique spellcasting called Pact Magic, which takes away lower-level spell slots as you level to force your spells to be cast at their highest possible level (note, any spell can be cast at a higher level, not all spells get extra effects from being cast this way.)
E) If nothing else has worked.
1) Disable Browser Extensions, VPNs, and/or Adblockers. Sometimes these mess with the way that D&D Beyond loads. It may not seem like they will affect things but it's worth disabling them all to see if the issue fixes itself and then enabling them one at a time to see which one is causing the issue.
2)Try just waiting a bit. Sometimes D&D Beyond does maintenance or is having server issues or any other number of things that could be messing with stuff. Usually, the system takes about 20-30 minutes to fully update but it could be longer depending on what is going on.
3) Post on the forums. If you’ve tried all of the other options the next best thing to do is to post on the forums asking for help with as detailed a message as you can manage. Try to include what you’ve tried, what specific issue you’ve had, any and all error messages you may have gotten, and a link to the problem character.
4) Submit a support ticket. If you post on the forums and just really can’t get a solution or it falls outside of the range that forum randos can help, you should open a support ticket by clicking here or via the ‘Help Portal’ link at the bottom of the page. All tickets are consolidated into one ticket based on your account and are dated by the most recent ticket submitted. Please only submit one ticket per issue as submitting multiple tickets will only push you back in the queue.
F) Tasha Deserved her own Section
1) Where is my optional content from Tashas? First to have access to the optional features from Tasha’s you need to have or have shared with you the whole book. Not individual tools or the compendium content, but the actual entire book. You need to toggle the content on (Red/to the right) before you can use the options class/race features. There are many things that are not properly implemented from Tasha’s. I direct you to this thread for more information about how to toggle everything and what is/isn't implemented currently.
2) How do I get the Artificer? You need to buy any of the subclasses to get access to the Artificer base class.
3) Where are my expanded spell list spells? Expanded spell lists are considered to be a class feature. You need to have that option enabled to have access to those spells. Because they are a class feature and not a part of the base class they don’t count towards spell lists of classes that get to pick spells from other classes' spell lists. For example, the Cleric expanded spell list does not allow for the Divine Soul Sorcerer to take spells from that list. It's like how the Druid Magic Initiate feat doesn't allow you to take spells from the specific expanded spell lists from the Druid subclass because it's a subclass feature.
4) Custom Lineage doesn't let you take racial feats. Custom Lineage and Custom Origin are NOT the same. Custom Lineage is the race option, while Custom Origin allows you to customize your specific race. The idea behind Custom Lineage is that you are something completely unique to the world that can’t otherwise be mechanically represented by re-flavoring other races. As such they are considered to be their own race and don't allow for racial feats from other races. Obviously, Your DM may allow you to use racial feats with a Custom Lineage Race in which case you can disable prerequisites and add it to your character sheet like normal.
I will try to update this as I can with common other questions, links, and images as I go. Feel free to let me know if I missed anything and to put any questions you may have in the comments. Thanks!
Special thanks to everyone who took a look at this for me to make sure that I got everything as correct as possible. Specifically pocketmouse,ArwensDaughter, and Sillvvawith extra special thanks to IamSposta for supplying images and videos.
Making the section on Tasha's made me realize just how much there is with each book that may be worth mentioning. I may add a section for each book with links to their respective bugs and support posts.
For anyone who is interested, I am still working on getting the information for this. Current plans are for MTG content specifics and Volos and MToF since they have been taken off of the market.
Update 6/23/22 - Added information relating to the semi-recent change to Steel Defender being a subclass feature instead of addable in extras, and basic information relating to Legacy content with links to further articles published by staff.
Why can't I find any joinable campaigns****ine says select character and scroll all the way down and select play campaign with this character but none of those options are there?
Are you having a hard time finding content in the D&D Beyond character creator? Well, worry not! Here is a consolidated list of the most common questions we ask and their answers to be able to troubleshoot your issue without needing to wait for someone to respond to your forum post asking for help. If this helped, please give it a 'Like' via the up arrow at the bottom of the post.
A) Did you buy the content on D&D Beyond?
1) D&D Beyond is a digital retailer and toolset. They are no different from your local bookstore. In order to have access to the content on D&D Beyond you need to buy it through D&D Beyond or make a duplicate within the homebrew creator. Buying a subscription does NOT give you access to any content. For more information, look at these threads: Hardcover Books, D&D Beyond, and You - D&D Beyond vs Physical Books: An Explanation - Homebrew FAQ - Everything You need to know about Homebrew
2) I bought the cheaper version. In addition to being able to read the books on D&D Beyond you need to buy the digital tools.
