I’m writing a homebrew campaign that’s not set in the forgotten realms or any other official setting, but for ease of prep I’m thinking of just reskinning locations that already exist for my own purposes. So, which sources, be they sourcebooks or adventures, have particularly interesting descriptions and details for towns and stuff that could be copied and pasted into a lore doc and played around with?
Sword Coast Adventure Guide, any of the Critical Role brand books, Van Richten's, or Rime of the Frostmaiden would all be solid choices. The bite-size adventure books like Yawning Portal or Candlekeep Mysteries would probably help as well.
Of course there's Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, Radiant Citadel, and Descent into Avernus for very detailed descriptions of very specific cities.
I'd also recommend reading any of the monster lore books - they have lots of juicy details that can serve as inspiration for towns as well. (Fair warning for this one, I know a lot of people complained about Monsters of the Multiverse but I haven't read that one. The previous books gave good lore, but they're sorta 'phased out' with MoTM).
As I type I realize that a ton of the books would be good resources for this. You just gotta read them all, that's the hard part.
To add on to a lot of the books VanZoeren listed, Storm King'sThunder has a ton of information on basically all the places on the Sword Coast. It is a lot less in-depth on each individual place than some of the other books such as SCAG, but it would work really well if you only need ideas for towns/villages/cities and want to fill in the details yourself.

STK has the Perfect amount of info on each place, it's awesome! Thanks for this, i think it would have been the last book i would have searched in otherwise :)
Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy has four cities in it, including Athkatla and Baldur’s Gate. I don't have the book, but have heard good things about it.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?

BoringBard's long and tedious posts somehow manage to enrapture audiences. How? Because he used Charm Person, the #1 bard spell!
He/him pronouns. Call me Bard. PROUD NERD!
