I'm running a campaign with a section in Ravnica (from Magic the Gathering - the plane with the 10 guilds). Anyways, so the goal is each party member will have to become the mazerunner for one of the ten guilds. Each guild has a different challenge to be completed before they can become that guild's mazerunner.
Anyways, once they all begin the maze, I'm trying to think of ideas on how to run it. Presumably they will all start in different areas. I think I can have them roll to see if they meet up like d10, 9+ you get to the meeting place, 8 and below you have an encounter. Then after each encounter the DC goes down by 1 until they all meet up. At that point is where I'm a little lost on what to do. I'd like this maze to take a full session, maybe even two to finally complete. I've got the ending down with the big boss, and I can easily add in other encounters with the other guild's mazerunners and stuff, but I'd like a lot of options that I can use as needed.
What kind of encounters have you guys run in a maze, and how did you deal with the maze itself? Any tips and info will be greatly appreciated!
I have a somewhat odd suggestion for you. There's an old 4E adventure from one of the dungeon magazines called "Owlbear Run". Now, this adventure actually would make a pretty good scaffolding for what you are trying to do, as it mostly depicts a race between competing contestants, and offers several interesting issues that can come up along the way. Now, in your case, you'd need to theme it to Ravnica and have some of the problems be more like puzzles, or traps and ambushes set by competing guilds, but there's a lot in the adventure already that would easily slide in to what you want with mostly just a window-dressing change.
