My party is currently playing the Sunless Citadel, and at the end of the adventure I plan to reward them with an apple from the Gulthias Tree. The party's barbarian has plans to use this fruit to cure their sister of a mysterious disease. However, when they return from the adventure, their sister will have been kidnapped. While they are searching for her, I plan to have a specific NPC give the party a magic item to keep the apple fresh, so it does not wither before they find the sister. Is there such a magic item, or should I make one up? I am thinking of a bag of holding, but I am unsure if it preserves perishable items. Any thoughts?
I'm not aware of any magic items that can do this directly.
Prestidigitation could keep a small container cold continuously. Shape Water can be used to similar effect since it can freeze water. The apple should keep for a month or two while refrigerated. Providing a magic item that gives them the ability to cast either cantrip is fairly harmless while still being a fun addition to the group's tools.
Alternatively, you could create a magic item that lets them store the apple in the Astral Plane. The Astral Plane is timeless, so the apple wouldn't decompose while it's there.
If you gave them a small box with a permanent gentle repose that should also preserve the apple. Yes, technically the spell is intended for preserving bodies but I traditionally rule it to function on preventing organic matter in general from decomposing (as this makes sense).
I have never played the sunless citadel so I don't know what the gulthias tree does, but if it can produce an apple that can cure disease wouldn't the apple be magical? In that case it could just prevent itself from being perishable, yeah?
If the food is magical, you can just handwave it and say because it's magical it doesn't spoil. If you want to keep other food fresh, have a bag or box with permanent purify food and drink
Food and other perishable items do not age or decay while inside a Chest of Preserving. The chest is 2½ feet long, 1½ feet wide, and 1 foot tall with a half-barrel lid. The chest has a lock, which can be picked with thieves' tools and a successful DC 15 Dexterity check. Smashing the lock or any other part of the chest renders it nonmagical.

The funny thing about this is, I had custom created one almost like it prior to finding out about the official one.

Concepts.
Bag of Colding: Bag of hold, but kept at crisp cool 40 degrees...
Galdware of Repose: This magical Box keeps dishes at the peak of freshness, just as if they came right out of the oven.
Gulthias Apple Tree Preserves: Just turn it into a jam, to preserve the magic.
