So I'm planning on making an in person D&D session with a couple of my friends, but I need help with the BBeG. Basic plot of the campaign is that the party tried to take out BBeG and almost died but lost all their memories. As they escape the BBeG and their subservients they flee to a local town (Meeting one) and possibly do a low level quest.
My question is, are Mind Flayers or Liches more powerful? I ask this because the plan is to either have a Lich King or Mindflayer King (with 3 of the others as Subservients)
The answer isn’t really strait forward. A single Lich is more powerful than a single mind flayer. Of course Liches tend to go solo while mind flayers almost always are part of a colony serving an elder brain, and an entire colony is definitely more powerful than a Lich. It depends when you want your campaign to conclude. A single mind flayer can be taken out by a party of 3-5th level characters in my experience, and a Lich would tend to be more like 7-9. Of course if you have a colony of flayers or a Lich who is a king of a bunch of other liches it would be much more difficult. Those would be higher levels like 15+ or beatable early if the pcs have help. Really deciding between the two creatures is just preference of what you want for the campaign.

When in doubt throw the naked, fingerless, thief that you’ve been keeping in a sack and feeding rotten squirrels to into the fireworks tent hoping that it causes an explosion.
okay, not technically either of the monsters you asked for, but consider the elder brain dragon from Fizban's. its breath weapon can make you an illithid so it kinda works, sorta, maybe?

Fun Fact: i gain more power the more you post on my forum threads. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
Make sure you get your dungeon made before worrying about this stuff too much. If you’re going with an illithilich a dungeon in the Underdark, with tomb elements, would be appropriate.
Start mapping out your dungeon, elevate it, furnish it, then set up all the monsters, encounters, puzzles, challenges and treasure.

Thanks in advance, HM.
Illithilich
From Volo's guide to monsters. mindflayer Lich. Have a regular lich as one sub-boss, a regular mindflayer as another.
Ooo... how have I never found him. Hes perfect. Is there another kind of thing I could use as a 3rd sub-boss?

So I want the 3 bosses to be before the Illithich. Maybe a difficulty between the fight with the Elder Brain Hivemind and the Lich Solo Battle.
