Oh boy, this is some what of a special subject of mind. Here are some simplified versions of some beliefs all of which are false
Humoralism ( goes with heroic medicine)- The body consists of 4 humors Bile, Black bile, Phlegm and Blood these determine personality and imbalance lead to sickness.
Heroic medicine ( goes with humoralism) - Illnesses must be violently purged or shocked from the body using blood letting, vomitting, sweating and amputation
Homeopathy- Illnesses can be cured by things that cause the same symptoms
Potentization- Medicines become better at healing the more dilute they are ( allot of medicines used to kill people so ironically this was kind of true...)
Exorcism- Illnesses are caused by evil spirits that can be chased away by threatening them with more powerful gods or spirits
Virtuous health (often related to exorcism)- Disease is caused by sin and prevented by acting virtuously
Finite life force- You have a set amount of life energy that dies when expended. Life energy is used to do things like reproduce and strenuous exercise causing you to die younger. Life is extended by celibacy and a relaxing life style.
Medical cannibalism- Body parts of the recently deceased, especially blood contain traces of life energy that have healing properties
Miasma- Disease is caused by corrupted air that has a foul smell. This bad air comes from those considered dirty and places like swamps
Panacea- There is a single mixture that can cure all diseases. Mixtures sometimes contain things like silver particles, bleach or lead.
Animal and human anatomy mix ups- As human dissension was often banned, animals would be used instead leading to misconceptions about some organs that vary greatly like the liver. For example many historical anatomists thought human livers had 4-6 lobes depending what animal they dissected. Humans have 2 lobed livers
Bio-electricity- Electricity is the animating force of the body and humans can be resurrected from the dead using electricity
Quintessence- some liquids ( usually alcohol) can be distilled down into the 5th element the substance of the gods and it can be mixed with other substances to perfect them an increase their healing properties
There was a Roman Author and Philosopher name Pliny the Elder. He wrote, with far too much authority, a lot of remedies for medical problems. The components of his remedies are as specific if not more than anything in D&D.
