(Just in case any of my players stumble across this. Please don't read this.)
Hi all, I'm hoping to get some help writing a plot to weave into one of my player's backstories. I've been trying to come up with an idea for a while, but for some reason nothing is coming to me. Any ideas would be appreciated! Here are the important details:
She is of a custom race known as the Horne. Basically they look like humans, except they have horns, and once per day they can transform or half transform into their blood animal. Her family's blood animal is a wolf.
Manticores have been attacking people of this race and taking their horns. They have taken hers, as well as dragged her brother off in their last encounter. He hasn't been seen since.
The current state of the world is essentially post-apocalyptic, with their city being protected by a barrier that wards off the darkness, and another city being Dwarven and in the body of a fallen titan. The material realm has been merged with the shadowfell, and the gods are dying.
She is a Beast Master ranger (companion being a wolf) and intends on multiclassing into cleric (tempest).
So that's the gist of it. Her brother vanished, she's missing a horn, and the manticores are up to something. The plot would hopefully be angsty but have a happy enough ending. If you have any ideas please let me know, as well as any questions. Thanks in advance!

If you love a character, you give them pain, ruin their lives, make them suffer. Maybe even throw in a heroic death.
- What impact has this had on the character? (Is the character not able to transform fully into their blood animal?)
- What's at stake if she doesn't get her horn back?
- What deity will she serve as a cleric? How will this impact the stakes of not finding her brother or not retrieving her horn?
- Does the death of the gods have anything to do with the manticores' actions?
- Why did the manticores take her brother? Is there something about him they think is special that you could reveal to actually be something the PC has? Something that will potentially save the gods or stop the manticores?
- How much do you want the PC's story to impact the overall plot of your larger campaign?
Answer these questions and then play the What If game with every answer. Write down the answers to every what if that you ask yourself and see where the best possibilities for maximum enjoyment lie for both your and your players. That may help you find your story.
Ok, the manticores are collecting the horns to be ground up and used as a powerful alchemical ingredient. Likewise wolves are being hunted by some other evil creatures for their bile, another alchemical item. The dwarven city is besieged by a dark force seeking to capture yet more powerful substances that are stored therein. And so on, let the party discover more and more good or wild things that are being attacked, slain and harvested. These elements are all being collected and sent to some central dark lair or fortress where the Lawful Evil big bad is conducting their rituals. Clearly they worship the darkness and the silence, and when their magics are complete then all will fade.
The old gods have already fallen, only the new gods still resist. These going gods of new life and fertility, of creativity and creation, and the chaotic gods of the storms are looking for heroes to wild their power against this great fading. The brother could be a hook to drag the player to investigate certain evils, but can have escaped already and would later turn up in the services of a tempest god.
Thanks fam, I think I've managed to come up with some pretty awesome story points, and even managed to involve the entire party's backstories in some way.
