I have been playing D&D for about a year now. I have a friend in Europe who loves playing hearing the stories of our group and would love to play, I offered to try DMing for her and her sister so they can try it with a video call.
I am doing the Hoard of the Dragon Queen premade campaign and I am thinking of using Roll 20 and discord for this game. Any suggestions about other systems to try?
I am also willing to listen to any advice you have to share.
Roll 20 is a pretty stable and well-used system. I don't do much if any online play other than Play-by-Post games here on the D&D Beyond forums, but I do hear that Discord is a pretty popular tool for voice/video chat-based games as well.

Roll20, with prep work out in by the DM, is an incredible tool. That being said, it’s not great if you don’t put in a good amount of effort, which kinda sucks.
I use discord for voice/video chat all the time and it works well.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
I think Roll20 will do the trick if everyone is playing online. If you are DMing for people live in person and you want your European friend to join in, you may be better off just doing some kind of video chat and pointing the camera at the table.

Agreed.
We did this for a while and I would say you may need to consider investing in a decent microphone. I trusted the guy on the other end to be honest in his dice rolls and it worked pretty well. I also run a weekly session using Fantasy Grounds and Discord (voice only) and that is good, but I miss being able to actually see the other players, and I am still getting used to 5 very different accents!
I love using figures and battlemats and real dice but FG really speeds up combat and bookkeeping, and the maps can be prepared in advance and revealed in moments. You always have the right 'figures'. Yes, it's not cheap, but if you value your time, it's worth it.
Roll20 has a pretty decent, robust dice rolling system. It covers just about everything you need. It also has ways to keep track of individual characters, for both the DM and the players. It is really a great site, but as I said, in order to get the full benefit, a lot of prep work needs to be put in by the DM. I would recommend trying it out, if you need an online campaign manager system.
Otherwise, I agree with the others when they say that if it’s just one person in the party, then video chat them and have a camera pointed at the table

What would you recommend using as a way for me to dm my friend in Europe? Would you suggest roll 20 or maybe something else?

Roleplaying since Runequest.
