I'm sure some of this has been covered before but I failed to find any answers to this specific scenario. So, I created a homebrew world several years ago for the first D&D campaign I ran, things got a bit out of hand and now I'm creating an entirely new TTRPG system for it. That however will take probably a year or two to finish so I thought I'd finish the original thought of it being a world for D&D.
It wouldn't be 1:1 regular 5e because I'm thinking of reworking some of the classes and subclasses and even creating a few new subclasses to better fit the world's lore. I would also rework most of the races I'd use. I've looked through several FAQ's and documents but I couldn't find anything that says is this acceptable or not. Like can I take more than just the one subclass per class from the SRD document and rework them or do I need to create new subclasses instead? Also am I allowed to rework the classes in the SRD or must they be as they are? Thank you in advance!
If you are talking about something to just use in your home game, then the sky is the limit. Do whatever you want. (You probably know that, but just in case.)
If you are talking about something you'd like to try and publish one day, you should not be looking for legal advice from random strangers on the Internet, as clever as are we all are around here. Turns out being rules lawyers doesn't make us actual lawyers. You would be better off finding an attorney who works on intellectual property issues and getting their opinion. Ideally someone with some experience in the game industry.
