I’m coming towards the end of my OotA campaign. I’m going to finish it with the PCs about 15th level. In the course of the campaign they have discovered that Lloth is behind the whole cosmic plot - but they do not know why.
I’ve also just discovered the War of the Spider Queen series of books. Not read them yet.
My question is: Could I use the War series as inspiration for a campaign climax where the PCs go into the Abyss and the Demonweb with a view to stopping Lolth’s terrible plans?
I’m happy to do some creative work. And my FR world does not follow the canon lore or timescale. I’m more interested in Rule of Cool than keeping it formal. I know that the War of the Spider Queen was set about 100 years before Rage of Demons, but as I say, I am happy to brush over that and am only really after using the War series as material/inspiration for a trip into the Demonweb.
You sure can use the War of the Spider Queen serie for your campaign if you want. You can also look at 4th Edition D&D Encounters series Council of Spiders and Web of the Spider Queen and War of Everlasting Darkness for inspiration if you need.
You can absolutly use that series for inspiration. You might also take some inspiration from Q1 Queen of the Demonweb Pits, since you're heading there anyways.

I've also got that module in original print (yes, I'm that old). It's very flea-bitten but still readable. And it really shows how bad the design of old adventure booklets were compared with now, some 40 years later. So hard on the eyes!
after 2 years, how this goes? the campaign happened?
I'm a fan of book series and I'm writing a adventure with War of Spider Queen Plot, but the time period can be any time the DM wished, before or after spellplague, 2nd sundering, most recent events in 5E etc.
After I DM Out of the Abyss for 4 years, I got lot of material, maps, npcs, plots to fill a War of Spider Queen Adventure, maybe something like 5th to 10th level, between 10-15 sessions. A middle.
The players all must be drows from Menzoberranzan lower houses, different houses, male or female, any class a drow would take.
it's always fun to weave more into modules. They are structures that you can play through and improve as you see fit. You're the DM! if you think it's cool to let the players go into the Demonweb Pits and try to stop Lolth, then go ahead with it. You can use whatever inspiration you need or want, because it's your game. That's the best part about DnD.

No, I never got this campaign idea off the ground, but it is still there on the back burner. Instead, I ran a homebrew campaign set in Wildemount from 1st to about 15th, and the finale of that was a reveal that Lolth (of course) was the BBEG in that campaign too. So, now I have two stables of ~15th-level PCs in two different worlds, all looking to go and give Lolth a taste of her medicine.
I'm about to resume playing in a Moonshae campaign now (with the same group), so I won't be DMing for a while. But when I do, a high-level mini campaign into the Demon Web Pits is still on the radar!
Happy to hear what others have done in this area...

Gosh, a bit of thread-romancy. :D
