It really depends on how you flavor the Rune Knight
The RK I played in a CoS campaign was multiclassed with a couple levels of Aberrant Mind sorcerer and had a backstory of, "he's actually part aberration (but doesn't know it) because his father cut a deal with some Entity to make his fortune". So I always described it as kind of a reality-warping/confusion effect, where the enemy would think they're attacking one of the party, but then my eyes would glow that weird pinkish-purple from the Color Out of Space and they'd find they'd actually stabbed an ally

With my rune knight, I thought of it like a little portal that opened up in front of both targets, so the sword or arrow or whatever went in one and came out the other.
Generally, I just view it as something that makes a creature momentarily hallucinate and they see the creature they were going to attack in the new target and go for them instead.
But there are many different ways to flavor an ability like this one with no clear description.

He doesn't have much besides the skin on his bones. Me: I'll take the skin on his bones, then.
"You see a gigantic, monstrous praying mantis burst from out of the ground. It sprays a stream of acid from it's mouth at one soldier, dissolving him instantly, then it turns and chomps another soldier in half with it's- "

I'm curious about how other DMs view the Cloud Rune ability of the Rune Knight.
Do you see it as a visible redirect?
A "glitch in the matrix" moment?
A reality edit of which no one is aware?
Or something else?
The two facts that always hang me up are that it happens AFTER a hit and that it can defy the original attack's range.
