So I'm wondering if it is the intention of the adventure for the players to get their share of the 1800 XP that the troll's CR of 5 gives them, or is its CR reduced somehow by starting with less HP? I ended up giving them each their share of the 1800 but they just levelled up straight away. I'm a brand new DM and have never played a campaign with XP either.
I’m a new DM too, but doing milestone in W:DH. Was there a reason you chose XP?
Anyways, it doesn’t matter all that much. We just completed chapter 1 and an extra level isn’t going to hurt them or you. The monsters you face in this chapter (towards the end) will give you tools to make combat a little harder. 2 of the monsters would have TPK my team if it weren’t for 1. Them bringing Neverember & 2. Me restricting some abilities on the monsters.
I fear, though, that your party will level up quite quickly if you continue XP advancement. I think you could actually get to lvl 3 by the end of the first chapter if you did it this way. Either way, look ahead and see where the party will be at if they succeed all combat encounters.

Generally speaking, the party will get the same amount of exp if the Troll had 48hp or 120 hp.
How much does it matter what level they are? You're the GM, make fights tougher if the characters are tougher.

Ok I think I will try to make fights tougher if I have to. Maybe Nihiloor could hang round for a round or so extra...
