One of my players (rogue elf) was hired to intimidate an NPC into doing _____. While intimidating them the NPC suddenly convulses and dies from some sort of poisoning. The rogue then has to scram and get out of dodge before anyone blames the death on him.
The location of the scene is a very pretentious Elven Capital (Syngorn for those familiar with CR).
Im finding this to be such a broad sense of possibilities that my mind is blanking on what I should do.
If anyone has some ideas on what the rogue could have been trying to get the NPC to do I would welcome the help.
Since posting this I have somewhat landed on the idea of the storyline involving a Rakshasa. Maybe the rogue was telling some government official to back off from from an ex, and somehow for some reason a Rakshasa kills the official and is able to pin it on the rogue.
He could have been trying to make him say a name or location, which the NPC was magically prevented from doing, to the point where it caused his death rather than betray the secret. Head of a cult. Government overthrow. Bastard son of the current ruler....
I don't know if this is your jam at all, but the scenario you just set up would fit perfectly with a story along the lines of Xenophon (or The Warriors for a modern retelling) about a group of heroes deep in enemy territory who are framed of the murder of an important local and have to survive the journey back home against difficult odds.
I don't think it matters much. The pc is obviously the fall guy. So the guys who did the real killing, would come up with a story that would entice the pc. Is the pc a super good guy? He could be told this elf knows who kidnapped some poor elf girl. Is the pc into money? Perfect go make this guy pay a protection fee, and the pc gets half.
I could be way off base but whatever the pc wants is what he should be told to do, just needs to be at said location, at said time.
