My players may or may not be heading to a plane belonging to the Goddess of Conjuration in my world, depending on their upcoming choices. If they do, I want to build up a list of possible encounters for monsters that might be very Conjuration-themed.
- Blink Dog - Phase Spider - Elementals - Pixie
Anyone have ideas for monsters that are associated with, or use Conjuration-type effects?
Could you flesh out the idea more? Why are blink dog, phase spider, and pixie conjuration themed? I understand elementals (conjure elemental spells).
If I were taking this theme, I would probably start bending the rules of conjuration in this plane: you can summon with fewer components. You can conjure things that don't normally conjure. Also, you could use themes of conjuration: earth-types can summon reskinned versions of zombies or walls. Fey-types can pull gradually strong fey creatures. One might just be a humble potion brewer.

Teleportation effects, annnnd I mixed up Pixies with something else in my head, so remove that. :P
Conjuration is summoning/teleportation, so I'm just sorting out what kind of monsters would make the plane home to help populate the combat-based challenges.
My players don't read:
As far as the actual interaction with the plane, I've already sorted that out (including Conjuration spell bonuses), really just looking for creatures with abilities or lore that tie to Conjuration, as that's the one part I'm currently lacking. :)
The deity is the goddess of the pathways, representing the magical road on which all conjuration magic travels. Its how planar travel works, its how creatures are summoned, it is how to teleport from one place to the other. Someone denounced the goddess, and his teleportation only got half of himself there-- That kind of deal. So going to the world they find themselves in a series of rooms with multiple choices for doorways, and it becomes puzzle-like in trying to get to Nyxca (the goddess), who they need to ask for help from. When they choose incorrect pathways, they instead find lairs of creatures (hence the question), or extraplanar portals that dilute their pathway.
In the end the players will be tested by Nyxca herself on the "Road not traveled", where I will have a social encounter for each of them privately, where they face the moment of their biggest regret, and decide if they take a different path or live with the mistakes that drove them to heroism.
Given how much conjuration can do, the real question is: what can you not include? Conjuration can move just about anything anywhere, which means your biggest task might not be finding creatures to use, but rather, the chances of encountering those creatures.
Surely I can have anything appear, you are quite correct!
Buuut I'm looking to include monsters with abilities related to Conjuration magic-- teleportation effects, summoning effects, and similar, not just be being used by the plane. For example, Kobold Press' Creature Codex has a monster that, when hit by a melee attack, can force the attacker to make a save or else be teleported up to x amount of feet away from the monster. That is a Conjuration-themed monster, to me. So looking for things in that vein, that can evoke the powers of conjuration themselves. :)
Some of these may be long shots, but I'll toss in to the pot:
Any of the Mephits with the variant Summon ability. Banshee Cloaker Couatl Imp Displacer Beast Doppleganger Faerie Dragon Galeb Duhr Gargolyle Ghost Hags Intellect Devourer Invisible Stalker Mimic Nightmare Shadow Specter Sprite Water Weird Will o' Wisp Wraith
Thank you for the suggestions! I honestly... Can't believe I missed Displacer Beasts? Brain-dead, apparently! Invisible Stalker is also a really great 'guard' type creature... I can imagine lots of them roaming around seeking Intruders. Kind of creepy.
Thanks!
