I am a very new DM playing with a group of 4 PCs through a campaign that is primarily set in the Underdark, borrowing elements from Out of the Abyss as needed. One of my PCs has a fairly involved backstory where as a human monk she was sent into the Underdark to seek and pray before a reverend shrine as a sort of 'graduation' challenge before returning to her monk enclave. Along the way she meets the other adventurers and gets wound up in the main storyline.
Ultimately, I would like to give this character the opportunity to find the shrine and complete her personal journey - however none of the shrines/temples outlined in OOTA seem quite right. I am looking for a good one-shot/scenario featuring an appropriate (human, lawful good monk) shrine that I could tie into the Underdark adventure. Any suggestions?
Just a few random ideas to spark the imagination, but I'm not answering in any kind of detail (it's quite late where I am and just came across the thread).
It could really be any shrine you decide on. It's a graduation "challenge" after all, so the shrine could have simply been installed by the monks as a goal instead of anything meaningful. It doesn't even have to be a shrine to a divine being. It could be a past leader or hero to the enclave. Or, being told its a revered shrine, it's really just a means of self discovery upon learning that it's not what she was told.
It doesn't even have to be an elaborate shrine either. Part of this challenge might even be determining what qualifies as the shrine. Monks (usually) teach wisdom as well as strength, after all. It could be a stack of rocks with a magical aura around it, an empty cavern on (magically or not) sacred ground, or even an elaborate underground temple. In this way, the "appropriate" shrine is just whatever you decide.
Another story hook to keep her engaged with the main adventure is that maybe this shrine ends up being found after it's been desecrated (isolated incident, or as a message from a rival faction/worshipers of another god). Does she then decide to seek out who did this? What happens when she finds them?
