Working on a campaign where my players are sent back in time by a sphinx, jumping through time from different periods over the campaign. If anyone us familiar with dnd history and monsters that can suggest some interesting monsters to throw against my players, that would be great.
If they're only going back a few centuries, or millennia - most D&D races have been around that long, in most settings. It's usually just a change in history, existing cultures, and level of advancement which change.

D&D history is kinda vague and complicated since there's many worlds and some of this stuff goes back to the dawn of time, but there's some info in the Monster Manual, Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes.
If you go back far enough, aboleths ruled the world in the time before the gods. It's not really clear which races they enslaved at that time.
In the Forgotten Realms, giants appeared shortly after dragons. Humans and elves weren't around yet. Their empire lasted about 4000 years before they went to war against the dragons and their empire collapsed.
Mind flayers also ruled all of the material plane in the very distant past, probably after the aboleths and the rise and fall of giants. They were overthrown by their gith slaves with the help of red dragons that Tiamat pledged to their cause. Grimlocks and kuo-toa were also among their victims.
The Yuan-Ti were born from an ancient human empire that performed dark rituals to become more snake-like.

How far back in time are they going?
If they go back really far, you might concentrate on Dinosaurs, Lizardfolk, Troglodytes, and many of the beast level creatures; the more "primitive" lifeforms.
