The adventure hints that Thavius Kreeg and the Vanthampurs were looking for a way to use the Shield of the Hidden Lord to doom Baldur’s Gate to Avernus. However, I could not find how it might be used.

Any ideas?

Here it is stated that Kreeg wants to achieve that by releasing the pit fiend trapped inside it.
