Hey everyone, I’m interested in starting up a PbP game on this site but I’m looking for a few opinions before I do so. To give you all a bit of context I’ve been around D&D since my childhood, back in the old Basic D&D Red Box days. D&D has been such a massive and integral part of my life that it’s hard to envisage a situation where I don’t have it. For various reasons I’ve turned to PbP as the best and most practical medium for me to enjoy the game.
On top of this, I love and enjoy writing. I absolutely adore writing long and in-depth passages of writing. I enjoy in-depth character roleplay interactions and really getting inside my characters heads. I might be very verbose when it comes to my posts, but that’s simply the way that I am — I truly enjoy creating living and breathing worlds, inasmuch as I can, through my own writing.
When I look at PbP, I see something that allows me to combine the two things I love most to do in my spare time. When I look across the PbP forum here, the vast majority of games seems to focus in rapid-fire, multiple postings a day that maybe amount to a line or two of prose and nothing more. There is very little in the way of descriptive and flavour text, and very little in the way of characterisation. The concepts that get posted tend to focus on the mechanics and build rather than the character itself.
I get why this is, PbP is glacially slow and I can see why rapid fire postings would be the order of the day in order to keep momentum up for the game.
The game I would be looking to create would not really be like that. I’d be looking to favour interesting, deep and well-crafted characters with interesting personalities and back stories to flesh out my game world. Rather than multiple posts per day, I would be looking for players who would perhaps be able to post 2-3 times per week but instead be willing to craft deep and interesting posts, therefore helping to build and craft the narrative along with me. Posting multiple times per day is a little beyond me I’m afraid due to my own circumstances, but I’d certainly be interested in running something where you post less, but the posts are lengthier and more in-depth in turn.
I think what I’m looking for, in essence, are good and strong writers who are willing to use their imaginations to create an epic story with me. Would there be any interest at all in a game like this, and also writers / role-players here looking for something like this?
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you
