I run a campaign. I've got a player using the spell sending to try to contact an NPC named Jupiter Rose. To them she's dead. But when they went back for her body its gone. Well in short terms the Lich there fighting controls bodies. If they try to use sending would the spell go through to the lich that now inhabits her body?
No. Think of it as if the soul were a SIM card to tie the phone number (soul) to the device (body). The lich has put a new SIM card in that device and calls to Jupiter’s number don’t get routed through his SIM.
Technically, no, it shouldn't - but you as the DM could totally rule that it does anyway - perhaps a fragment of this woman's soul still exists within the body, and that's how the Lich is able to inhabit the body, by clinging onto that fragment of soul. It could be a sad affair if the party has to destroy the last fragment of her soul in order to get the lich to vacate her body.
If you go this route, perhaps the Lich knows the party is after them and uses the Sending spell as a way to try to lure the party into a trap.
I very much love this. Once they reached level 11 I told them I was done babying them. Jupiter's the entire parties favorite NPC. As much as I loved playing her. She was part of the story development. She went out with a bang i gave her a glorious death sacrificing herself to let the party get away. One of my players teared up. It made me do the same. They may also look for a way to save her soul so I think ill do with this
This depends on what the lich is using to control bodies. The simplest RAW option would be that she wasn't quite dead (maybe a Revivify), got recovered, and the lich then cast Magic Jar, in which case the message goes to the original owner, who is trapped in the jar.
Awesome to hear! It's always tragic when something happens to a favored NPC, and it sounds like this character was liked enough to have some big emotional impact on the group if they think they can save her - and maybe they can, maybe there's a way to kill the lich's soul and save her, but maybe not. Maybe the best thing they can do for her is mercy-kill her final fragment of soul to give her rest. If you do this maybe there's a beautiful moment at the end where the fragment of her soul comes out to help them beat the lich and seal it off once and for all, thanks them for freeing her soul so she can move on, and disappears into a beautiful flash of light.
Or not. Up to you! Have fun with it, and good luck!

I just have to say, rules notwithstanding, Jupiter Rose is a fantastic name. Good on you.
And a raise dead could bring her back, if they handle business fast enough and get rid of the lich, assuming the lich isn’t too hard on the body.

Thank you.
The fact the lich controls the body doesn't mean he IS the body, so the message doesn't arrive to him.
