Ok so first things fires, sorry if this is the wrong place for this couldn't quite work out the best place for it.
More of a worldbuilding question this one.
If a nation was given ample time and resources to prepare for the arrival of an undead army how might they do so? What special measures might be taken? How might it affect the arms, armour, tactics, and formations of the military?
A few caveats/notes for this:
- Prep time is roughly a decade
-The nation is situated on a tropical archipelago
-Nothing ridiculous like "have an army of level 20 paladins with vorpal swords"
-The setting is roughly late medieval/early renaissance
Wall off their cities for starters. Make the walls metal and 20-30 feet high. Have holy symbols of Lathander the Morning Lord carved along each panel of the wall.Have city engineers construct moats around each city, using sea water. Have an order of clerics in each city whom job it is to bless the sea water that flows into the moats via tides each day. This takes care of undead in general, as well as vampires via moving water. At each entrance point into a walled city have a vengeance Paladin stationed who’s job it is to pour holy water on anyone’s arm that enters the city, those that fail are immediately decapitated. I would have Vengence Paladins and Light Clerics partnered with each other as each cities primary internal defense force. All funerals are Viking funeral pyres as to insure each city does not have a supply of dead bodies to be raised. As for roaming patrols outside cities, I would have the cities have used this time to create trenches outside of city moats and hills for high ground. In these defensive positions the cities would have necromancers to subjugate any undead that got near the city and repurpose them for city defense.
How about that Hallow spell, 60' radius, permanent until dispelled, stops undead from entering into the area, and you get to add an extra effect as well. So may make a hallowed ring around your entire city so infantry can't even get to the walls. Then hallow the interior of the city with the extradimensional interference so nothing can teleport into the city.
