If you've seen the ads for $115 projectors and a "map pack", it's not worth it. It's simply a drop-shipped short throw projector at double the price, and a bunch of AI generated map images, worse than thousands available for free from great creators on Patreon.
This is what they're selling. The MagicCube HY300Pro. Available on Amazon for $49.95 USD.
I can actually recommend the projector as a way to go. It works well in a mildly lit room (not bright sunlight) on my Chessex Battlemat. You just need to get a stand or a mount to raise it above the table. And then I use Skinny Minis, as they cast less of a shadow.
But do NOT pay double the price because you saw a Facebook ad.
A couple of YouTubers I follow did videos on this before Christmas because it was getting to ubiquitous. In addition to CozyTime there were about a dozen other companies all with identical websites but different names so presumably the same drop shippers hoping to catch people who liked the idea but had heard that one of them was a con
I could see wanting that if I'm ever playing purely in person again. Does it have a tripod connector in the base?
Yep, standard projector screwmount in the base. I bought a stand that has an extended arm so that it sits out over the table, but the auto-keystone in the HY300 is really effective too.
So just get a projector (and by a mapmaking subscription) or just use a software like dungeon alchemist and maps then
I actually use the Maps VTT Spectator view on the projector. Most of the time we use minis, but I can also put stickers and large tokens and permanent spell effects onto the VTT map.
