So I'm running a kinda open campaign. It's my first campaign and didn't want to paint myself into a corner as I figured things out. I've finally settled on an idea that would involve a Mind Flayer Lich and Lolth as the big bads.
My questions are as follows. Does the Mind Flayer seem like a good big bad from a power level stand point? And is Lolth in any of the 5e books?

A campaign that involves the PCs plausibly being able to take on a CR 22 Mind Flayer Lich (Illithilich) is probably running until at least level 15; plausibly taking on a goddess is more in the scope of level 20 campaigns (I'm not aware of a standard writeup, but probably around CR 30. I see two writeups in homebrew).
In general, I wouldn't try to run an epic 1-20 game as a novice DM, or even as a pretty experienced DM, because it's very hard to keep a campaign going on that long without it collapsing under its own weight. I would start with something smaller scale and, depending how it goes, maybe reveal after the tier 1 bosses are defeated that the conspiracy goes deeper...
