The craft paint, especially light colors like yellow, white and flesh, need a ton of coats and in the end it looks like you used on big sloppy coat. I wish there was budget hobby paints. There's budget everything else.
I feel you, especially when there's no real way to purchase model paints in "bulk" quantities for cheaper.
Depending on what you're trying to do, you can also try making your own using different inks/paints and mediums like Liquitex matte medium or something similar. If you look up "DIY Speedpaints" for example, there are a ton of youtube videos explaining the process of making your own. It's a slight up-front purchase for the matte mediums and stuff, but it gets stretched much further.
Also, for lighter colors like yellow, sometimes you just need multiple coats, even with the nicer paints. Or a decent undercoat, like pink (for some reason it makes the yellow pop a lot more?)
