The D&D adventure board games are a great source for minis at a pretty low price. Plus you get a pretty fun game along with them. There are four of them out there and each comes with about 40 minis per. Great way to get a good start on your mini collection. There is also a Reaper Bones mini kickstarter that just started as well you can snag a huge batch for a great price too. I think my owlbear came in a Dungeon Command game, another D&D game with great minis.

I just snagged Legend of Drizzt for $25.00 used yesterday, it was possibly one of the oddest transactions I've ever been a part of not scary just slightly weird. I've been trying to get some of the D&D board games, my minis collection is growing pretty quick I started with some WoW miniatures and a few of the bones old confrontation board game, some mage knight while they may be a bit mish mashed I think they will help make an awesome game!
Sounds like you're off to a great start! Mage knight figures work great as you said, and you can rebase them too if you want. Zombicide Black Plague is another great game that comes with a TON of minis. A lot of them are zombies but you get 6 survivors too and there are tons of expansion options with lots of minis.
I'm finishing up painting Shadows over camelot now and also The Others:7 sins for a friend.
Wow I will definitely check that out I've just been scavenging the internet atm, trying to get the last monsters I need for LMoP. Skeletons are proving most elusive, I bought what I thought was a set on eBay as they listed it as the complete skeleton horde which was supposed to be 12 figures when i got the item it was just a piece of paper with the horde on it. Womp womp, I think it will turn out alright in the end.
One of the D&D boardgames has skeletons in it, I don't recall which one but there are three of them. There are a few sellers on Ebay where you can pick out specific figures in batches and order them. Haven't tried it myself but I've heard good things.
I've seen some good things on ebay as far as figures, they look great but I haven't done any of the figure pick lots yet. I think I might need to slow down on Mini buying for now and paint what I have!
I recommend the "Learn to Paint" kits from Reaper Miniatures. They come with paints, bones miniatures to paint, brushes and detailed instructions on how to paint the figures in the kit.

I have been using my artists acrylics and it's been working out well, but I have a degree in art so that kinda makes it easier for me to mix etc. I need to just go less dark I should say. Really enjoying painting though need to get a couple fine detail brushes which I have on order from Amazon.
I repainted one of my WoW miniatures for a PC (I've only been doing monsters so far) she came out pretty good! Need to get a good shot of her cape though. Only issue was my little cat Burrito ate her staff when my back was turned, so I had to hot glue it back together.
