So I'm doing a first level introductory dungeon and decide stirges would be a good fit for the natural cavern portion. So I got out my scratch building bits and bobs:
Now I start bending some 28 gauge floral wire because I have a lot of it. (I have since trimmed my nails)
I doubled the wire and gave it a few twists, then squashed the loop at the end to make a tiny duck's beak.
Next I split the tail of the wire and formed loops to either side. Note the loops are spaced outward a bit like paddles. i brought the two wires back to the center and did a couple of turns to make a body.
To form the head I bent the wire into a swan's neck and then squashed it together tight just after the beak.
[Sorry, I can't seem to get the picture thing to work for me. So here is a link to my Flickr folder https://www.flickr.com/photos/185681883@N07/49118766082/in/dateposted-public/ ]
So I'm doing a first level introductory dungeon and decide stirges would be a good fit for the natural cavern portion. So I got out my scratch building bits and bobs:
First I'm gonna need a base. I glued three pins to a 15x40 mm base with Testors red. Note the ad hoc wire support while the glue dries. https://www.flickr.com/photos/185681883@N07/49118561481/in/dateposted-public/

I ran one length of wire straight back to make a working tail and used the other to form rough claws underneath. https://www.flickr.com/photos/185681883@N07/49118761217/in/dateposted-public/
I shaped those loops into rough rectangles and nipped off the bottom. A refrigerator magnet is a good place to keep wire bits after snipping. https://www.flickr.com/photos/185681883@N07/49118553931/in/dateposted-public/
I was going to mount on the pins at this point but they didn't want to stay, so I decided to goop them first. So I stuck the tails into the Styrofoam to hold them while the goop dried. https://www.flickr.com/photos/185681883@N07/49118046388/in/dateposted-public/
First I tried Gorilla glue to cover the pin heads with foam but didn't like the results. I'm going to cut the pins at varying heights.
Note the blue tape on the pin points. Not good to have them fly across the room and get lost in the carpet. https://www.flickr.com/photos/185681883@N07/49118052408/in/dateposted-public/
Mounted with superglue. (Slathered the bases too to cover the pin heads.) https://www.flickr.com/photos/185681883@N07/49118043183/in/dateposted-public/
Over to the painting station for a brush on coat of grey primer. I decided to leave the long tails on because "rule of cool." I used disposable shot cups and a bit of poster putty for temporary painting handles. https://www.flickr.com/photos/185681883@N07/49118739322/in/dateposted-public/

I will post more pictures showing the paint job. I know these are a bit over sized and look a bit like flying reptiles. I'm using a lot of artistic license here, 'kay? https://www.flickr.com/photos/185681883@N07/49119231551/in/dateposted-public/
I hear them meeping on paint station begging to be painted....

*Not to be confused with Sturgis, the annual biker meet.
Pictures aren't coming across. I'll just post a link to my flickr folder.

The paintjob's the thing. All done save the Modge Podge sealant. https://www.flickr.com/photos/185681883@N07/49119224816/in/dateposted-public/
