just started playing and my first role is DM, I've been buying up minis as I can but I was wondering what everyone does for minis? im really looking for generic minis. towns guards locals things like that. or maybe even larger than 1 or 2 at a time packages of basic mobs. hobgoblins and beasts. things like that. any help be amazing. im trying to learn to make dungeon tiles and other props as well. is there a good way to do grids like a stamp or something to make em faster? I don't have a steady hand at all lol
I mostly use the official D&D miniatures too, although I sometimes buy and use other miniatures as well if they look cool. I let my players use whatever miniatures they want to represent their characters.
I've been buying all the wizkids I can get my hands on. I think I'm at 200 minis from the last week of going to stores and scrounging what I can. Stock is low and nothing consistent. I need a good amount of badies for this campaign.
Hero Forge for my PCs and special NPCs, and whatever I like on the shelf at my local gaming store for the rest. Usually Reaper Bones because they're cheap, readily available, and I love to paint.
My DM uses wooden meeple for all NPCs and enemies. They are super cheap and effective. Find 'em on Amazon and Etsy.
I’ve gone for a different route. Check out Tactical Tokens. They are blank tokens that you can use dry or wet erase markers on. My players love them. They actually just finished a Kickstarter doing 2,3&4inch tokens along with colors and all sorts of goodies. If you haven’t checked them out then you’re missing out. I love mine.
The Warhammer minis are 35mm and normally the D&D ones are 28mm. They are a good deal larger, but that allows them more detail and they look a lot nicer. I use a lot of them from an old orc and gobbo army. I have never had a player complain the size difference. One person noticed, but said they figured it was just a better miniature.
My personal favorite option is to use Hero Forge for pc minis. They have such a wide variety and they are so much fun to customize. In my opinion the price is really good for a 100% custom miniature. Depending on how much you want to spend and how important the npc is you can also use Hero Forge to create npc's. For monsters and generic miniatures, it depends. Sometimes I will go with Reaper Bones, because they are cheap, but I mostly use Miniature Market and other sites like that to get my minis because they are official and high quality.
I use games workshop miniatures mostly. The official dnd ones are good for PCs and less stylised creatures, otherwise I just kitbash a couple minis into something i need.
I ordered some Hand of Glory minis from the past KS. but won't receive them for a few months. We typically use lego minifigures but have a few wizkids as well.

I don't have any yet, but I'm planning on getting one for my PC from Hero Forge.
Hello! I am just a relatively new D&D player, who also likes SimplePlanes and War Thunder.
My characters are:
I use minis from reaper Bones, D&D 'official', Warhammer and Runewars.
As for the grids, you can print off 1" graph paper and just use that. I built and use the 3d tiles from Wyloch on YouTube.
Warhammer works? I thought they were to big? man they sell good group kits like elf armies right?
Can confirm. Warhammer minis are super cool, and I think that they are the right size.

My characters are:
oh snap that is awesome wonder if they have hobgoblin hordes and cavalry.
Humans are close enough to hobgoblins.

They do not any more. Hobgoblins were only ever provided with the old Chaos Dwarf army. You might check out Mantic Games.
