Noob player here, only two games in my adult dnd life. Played a bit as a kid, but damn, that’s a while back!:)
Anyhoo, *possible spoiler warning*
I played Embers of Everwood as a lvl. 2 necromancer with Zhentarem faction. Got the boon(?) where the woman we helped would sponsor me into the cloak. Now I’m off to play Cloaks and Shadows...
As I understand it, the Cloak isn’t really a faction, but what are they then?
Just a random low-key secret society. I don't know how familiar you are with American society groups, but the "factions" in the Forgotten Realms are akin in scope to things like the Boy Scouts or the Masons...or maybe three three main animal-themed clubs like the Elks, Moose, or Lions. The Cloaks are on about the same level as say....Shriners.

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
The Cloaks are a faction with Renown boons. They're not so much a secret society as the ONLY LEGAL WAY TO BE AN ARCANE CASTER IN MULMASTER. Join or Die, really. What's good about her offer is that you get an extra point of renown with the Cloaks basically, without having to spend the requisite downtime and money, IIRC.
