I can't really find anything more recent. I certainly haven't heard anything.
However, I am dubious that they have ever really worked on it even it if has been "on their list" for years. The 2019 article makes it sound like "really soon now".
The difficult issue would have been limiting sources and options for character building to only those allowed for AL. However, as we have seen over the last few years, this can change year by year, season by season. This makes the feature itself a moving target. They can't implement it for a single season - they have to implement something flexible enough that it can easily be adjusted as AL changes their rules in unknown ways each year. This makes it difficult to scope the project and difficult to figure out exactly what to implement (Consider that at various times AL has limited the choice of source books to PHB+1 [gone now] so once a character used something from a non-PHB source it would have to lock out content from all the other sources, AL has also limited content within sources like only certain races allowed from MtoF for example - implementing something that was so granular as to allow choice of individual features from each source as allowed content would be far too much effort to implement, not impossible, just not worth the development time) - all of these would tend to mean the project would not be addressed. In addition, the AL community is only a fraction of the D&D Beyond users so the feature itself isn't even worth much development effort in terms of user base interest.
However, the ONE low hanging fruit item that I would like D&D Beyond to add would be a notes page dedicated to logging usable for AL or whatever other logging type use a player or DM might have. The player could record what happens in each session to create a story OR the player could record the module/DM/AL rewards. As it is, I use the "Other" tab of the Notes section which has no structure at all. It works in a pinch but it would be nice to have a tab with something like journal entries specifically for logging whatever information a player might like to record about their character's adventures. They could call it the "Character Journal" :)
My guess is Wizard of the Coast wont allow it and they need to do what Wizard's tell them or they wont let them sell the ebooks. If they added a AL league option it would cut down on book sales. I can't think of another reason.. It wouldn't be a four year project to add a rule set feature to what is essentially a fancy specialized spread sheet.
I make all my AL characters on DDB, one just needs to know AL rules. I don’t think it has anything to do with hardcovers and everything to do with the fact that the rules were changing every year. Now that PBH +1 is gone, it is so much easier, especially since you can filter out some source material on the character builder home page (such at MtG or Eberron content). i agree with above, a nice feature to have would be a journal function, and that’s not just applicable to AL.
And the Wizards won’t let them arguement is kinda moot in light of today’s announcement.
Adding a journal function with entries should be easy since it would just display like the notes or bio tabs with more fields (though it would require more database space) and is more generally applicable than AL. Some people love to record the exploits of the character for fun or for possible future stories - so it isn't exclusively an AL feature.
They also need to add more source filters at character creation so that you can toggle on and off individual sources (SRD, PHB, XGtE, TCoE, MtoF, Volos ... etc). Since all of the options are tagged in the database with their sources (they come up that way in the compendium) and since the character creator also knows which sources you own for character creation, it should also be relatively straight forward to limit the sources for character creation with greater granularity than they currently have. This is also not an AL feature but would be useful in that context.
Thank you for your replies. I agree with David42. I would like to see us being able to track all the game logs tied into character sheet (Dates, Adventures, Characters and NPCs encountered, notes, gold, downtime, story rewards, and all items acquired for each character.) This is the first and easiest in my opinion too. WOTC really needs to flesh out AL rules as I am sure they already know. There is so much available material that has not been incorporated into AL yet. AL is a wonderful entry into D&D in my opinion and WOTC would be wise to put more resources and people into it. Fingers crossed
The following books can be used to create your AL pc. Players Handbook, Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons, Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, Sword Coast Adventure’s Guide, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, Volo’s Guide to Monsters, The Wild Beyond Witchlight, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, Elemental Evil Player’s Companion, Tortles from Tortle Package and Locathah from Locathah Rising and other selected adventures. Eberron and Ravenloft Mist Hunters have separate rules.
It has been quite some time since I have heard anything about this. An update would be much appreciated.
Good question :)
I think it has been on their roadmap for years now. It was certainly requested long ago.

D&D Beyond joins Wizards of the Coast! I am hoping this will green light some features for AL on D&D Beyond now.

No Gaming is Better than Bad Gaming.
I am still curious if new features on D&D beyond for Adventurers League are in the works.
