So I've had a couple characters made for Adventure League play, designed to be support types that would work with just about any group (a Cleric and a Bard). I thought it'd be fun to have them join with random drop-in groups instead of a long campaign with the same party. But the pandemic and my health conditions mean I don't feel comfortable doing in-person play.
But I really like both character ideas and would like to actually play them, as well as have fun playing with an assortment of people! Does anybody know of any good groups that do drop-in style of Adventure League play online? Ideally ones with some standards, to alleviate some of the risk in joining a group of random strangers online.
There are a number of Discord servers that have AL play much as you describe. Folks sign up and then play when the game is run. The people playing any individual game is pretty random. I don't think any of them have "standards" since there is no way to vet individuals for online play. However, someone who is a problem might get kicked from a server or not allowed back. On the other hand, I haven't run into any people who were a real problem but I've probably only played a dozen or so online pick up games.
A couple possible places to look on Discord: Daddy Warbux (DWB RPG), The Adventurer Leagues - you can also just try searching on Discord and see what comes up. In addition, you could look/post in the Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds forums and the DDB looking for group forums asking for other suggestions.

I'm trying out DWB since they use D&DB and roll20 which I already have some experience with. Fantasy Grounds discord also seemed like a nice group but I would need to learn Fantasy Grounds' system.
I hope you get into it, quite fun. I feel that I must recommend the online "taverncon" that TAL runs June 24, my first encounter with online game. And also, that hidden network of games on Warhorn is a great way to infiltrate more discords :-)

Thanks David42! Actually, I found this other thread in a subsequent search, and the last post was by you and had some good links! https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/d-d-adventurers-league/98007-how-is-al-and-are-there-online-games

if you go to wotc's official discord, there's a channel called 'al-looking-for-group' and another called 'al-looking-for-players' that might help.
