Hello, I believe I understand the rules for creating/using a Custom background (under 2024 PHB ruleset) but I'd like to be sure before I drive several hours to my first AL game in many years. I believe a custom background grants 2 skill proficiencies, 1 tool proficiency and an Origin feat?
I want to create a background called "Itinerant Priest" (or perhaps the easier to say "Missionary"). The idea is a person who wants to join a temple, but is sent on a year long journey to study and gain experience, before coming back to the temple and pledging to serve.
The three stats associated with it would be WIS, CHA, and CON (traveling hardens your body, dealing with people improves your confidence, study and contemplation builds good judgement).
The two skills would be Religion and Insight, from learning about other religions, and learning how to interact with people who need your help.
The tool proficiency would be Herbalism Kit. Before you learn any real magic, you will learn herbal remedies and how to identify helpful plants. (Later it allows crafting of helpful things like antitoxin, healing kits, and Potions of Healing).
The origin feat would be Magic Initiate (Druid) because the traveling, herbalism, and divine path you have started will draw out any magical talent you have (something the temple will be looking for, if you return). The recommended choices for cantrips are Guidance (what you do for people usually) and Shillelagh (club and staff are a traveler's defense), and for the once a day spell choose Goodberry (never lack for sustenance and you have some tiny magical healing you can hand out to common folk).
Would this be a legal Custom background for AL play?
Thanks!
