I am so happy to share with you the debut of my new book, Overland, available on DMs Guild! Two years in the making, 191 pages, Overland is aimed at Dungeon Masters who often find themselves unprepared for overland journeys with their party, and at arming them with the tools to make improvising these moments easy and memorable.
As a father, full-time employee in the entertainment industry, Cub Scout den leader, and – of course – Dungeon Master, I’m often caught unprepared for the last-minute requests from friends and family to play D&D. I lean heavily on pre-made content, and on the narrative blocks found within, in order to jumpstart my imagination at a moment’s notice. But when the adventure calls for the party to journey from one location to another, I’m left with no help within the adventure to guide me, no narrative blocks to read, and I end up hand-waving travel, robbing my groups of colorful moments in the great wilds of my world. And so I wrote Overland!
Overland contains 546 narrative blocks to read aloud, including 155 boons that provide temporary assistance to the party, 177 setbacks that challenge them to cope with the unexpected, and 214 minor occurrences that simply provide poetic descriptions of ordinary moments in order to paint a vivid picture of travel. When travel inevitably involves random encounters, Overland assists with 26 combat encounter motivations that provide insight into why a creature might tangle with the group, along with 12 combat encounter modifications that provide colorful challenges on the battlefield.
