May wait till the new books come out to get the book, which gives me a chance to read other stuff and have a new place to call home. Until then, I do have some ground rules to have for the group in general do's and do nots, and will add more as I see fit (you know what they say: You haven't lived until you are the reason a rule or law exists.
I was wondering what your own lists are areas to improve.
1. Be respectful of others. We should have a bunch of people coming in from all kinds of backgrounds, belief systems, education, political leanings, romantic leanings, views of their being, and so on and so on. Be nice, do not target others due to those backgrounds and this should avoid arguments. I am not saying leave your morals, politics and religion at the door, but I am saying no Bible Fights and sound less like Bill Marr and Michal Moor stepped into a room if it comes on. I want to listen to a bunch of man children I would say Dub is better than Sub online.
2. I will allow some rowdy behavior to an extent, but if it makes you uncomfortable speak up publicly or tell me privately so we can deal with it while it’s a small problem and it doesn’t get out of hand. Cancer is better dealt with when its small and early as possible, and problematic behavior (different from rowdy) is the same.
3.If kids are around, clean up language REAL quick. I prescribe to the rule of let the parents be the ones that teach them the bad behaviors and languages, not us (worse case scenario, also covers our butts when the Helicopter types fly in). Describing blood and gore will also be here due to that. Kids around: How to Train your Dragon or a first wave Marvel Cinematic Universe level of violence. Kids gone, we can go full Mortal Kombat and God of war if people are comfortable with that.
4. Keep in mind this is a collaborative game; you have to make a reason for your character to want to be in this group. Be it for glory or honor, or what ever, you have to decide why your character would want to be here, even grudgingly. Everyone can have a grump (Seven Dwarves has Grumpy, X-Men has Wolverine, Maximals have Rattrap). My job is to provide the playground.
5. No Spotlight Hogging. Everyone gets their chance to shine if they so wish, and If I miss someone let me know so I can correct this
6. No SA! Besides the fact I don’t think a lot of people can cover this topic with the grace it needs to not be done for shock value, you don’t know who in the group has had this as an issue in their life. I do not wat to trigger anyone that have had this horrible thing done to them. This also means if I think if consent is questionable, not having it. This is D&D, not 50 Shades, I don’t care how long your Rouge Dark Elf as lived in the Underdark. Also I don't care if everyone here is playing an evil character, no means no.
6. Romance is an option amongst characters, but I will not push it nor ask to have it pushed on anyone, including myself. Anything more spicy than a kiss, most hugs, and holding hands may lead to fade to back. There is no discussion here. See rule 5 when it comes to questionable consent. Also remember what happens between characters do not necessarily translate to the person behind the characters. please remember real world and game world are 2 different things, but if its still causing problems speak up.
7. I take feedback. If people have a problem, a concern, or a question I will listen. I will not hear rants or have arguments. Discussions, yes. Verbal equivalent of a fist fight, no. I want to improve, not be brow eaten into submission. This includes dealings with other players.
8.Unless its super serious, I will give warnings to players (the Usual Are you Sure, did you do this, do you really want to, Yes AND…) if I think something is a bad idea. These hints will continue two more times with more direct hints until I have to be as blunt as a hammer about it.
9. Unless super serious, I will not ban people. When someone becomes problematic, I will try to gently correct it. However, if the complaints get bad enough, I will have a “Come To Jesus” moment” to be an intervention. If this is still a problem, I will see how the others want done. If its bad enough, I might have to kick the problem player from the table for a while until I think they have grown up, or if disturbed enough may just permaban them. Otherwise I will leave it to the other players hands to decide their fate.
Respectful behavior: Be nice to others, avoid arguments based on personal beliefs, and clean up language when kids are around.
Collaborative play: Make a reason for your character to be in the group and avoid spotlight hogging.
No Sexual Assault (SA): Consent is mandatory, and anything more than mild romance fades to black.
Constructive feedback: Raise concerns but avoid arguments. The host wants to improve but not be intimidated.
Problem players: Warnings will be given for bad behavior. Removal from the game is possible for repeat offenses.
Things I would add:
Things to Avoid/Trigger Warnings:
Simple is Best: Just let me know if something makes you uncomfortable. You don't need to explain your reasons in detail. A simple "I'm not a fan of [topic]" is perfectly fine.
Open Communication: My goal is to create a safe space for everyone. Your comfort is important, so please speak up if anything feels off. Please do not expect your party members to speak up for you or assume they know things that bother you.
Homebrew Rules & Optional Rulings:
Expect the Unexpected: I may and more than likely will introduce or modify rules on the fly. Last minute suggestions wont be fully reviewed, so please bring up ideas before session.
Out-of-Game Conflicts:
Respecting Boundaries: This game is for fun, so let's keep personal issues separate. If you have a disagreement with another player outside of the game, please handle it privately. I'm not here to mediate non-game related conflicts. If it affects the game, I will bring the issue in front of the whole party and majority vote.
