In a face-to-face game, I give important documents as handouts. That way there is a physical reminder of the plot hook.
If the game is stalling, I will unsubtly remind them, "OK, maybe you should go through the player folder and see if there are any items you've forgotten about."
In an online game, you can do a similar thing with some sort of document repository. Make the handouts (they don't have to be flash - a simple drawing program can do a scroll-like outline and some text in a cool font) and upload them to the site.
Out online game I do everything in Google docs, so it was really easy in session 0 to set up a shared folder for eh players. This has everything in it from the bag of holding inventory, to player handouts, to price guides so the players know if 100 gold is high for a chess set :).
Thanks, all! More excellent ides. I do write a session review after each game with the author being an unknown chronicler who will figure prominently later in the campaign. So they're invested in that. Then I also give them a detailed review before the start of each session. I'll mention the map in the spoken review tonight and already have in the written review. Fingers crossed they get the hint and read the doc!
Many thanks again to all for all of the great input!
