Hey fellow DMs, quick question. Would my dragonborn players instantly tell the difference between another dragonborn person and a Half Dragon vet? Even if they're a different color of dragonborn?
I would say yes. I did a quick check because I never thought of how similar these appear. Apparently Half Dragons have tails where Dragonborn do not. Also, they are created in completely different ways so I would assume there would be other ways (especially being of the race) that one could tell the difference.
The big difference, by RAW, is tails... although the Wildemount book confuses that a bit since I think it's the first time where they overtly introduced a subrace of Dragonborn that had tails, but that's sort of it's own world. Still, it's fairly common for Dragonborn players to have tails, since I think it only gets mentioned once in the Race description that they lack tails.
Other than that, a big difference is that Half-Dragons look much more dragonlike in the face... they basically look like miniature versions of whatever dragon species they descend from, whereas Dragonborn are generally depicted as having features that aren't quite as distinct, and Dragonborn also have head tendrils that largely function as hair for design purposes. I wouldn't say that all players would instantly know the difference... maybe call for a Nature check to see if they can tell the difference, but there's enough distinguishing features between the two races that someone reasonably familiar with them would notice the difference.
I mean, they would only look like Dragonborns with wings and tails if their draconic origins was higly expressed. There are several instances though of half-dragons just looking like a member of their humanoid origin but just covered in scales, or a humanoid with scaly patches and horns or fins protruding in places.
