Whilst exploring a wizard's tower the party managed to find, identify and unlock his magic mirror. The mirror in question is a portal to another part of the material plane, essentially it was a way for the mage to investigate a dangerous and hostile continent without leaving his tower. The party, through some manipulation on their part have managed to get the mirror out of the tower and into a demiplane they know how to access. They also kidnapped a rug of smothering....dammed kleptomaniacs.
Am I right in ruling that the mirror would no longer work as its not located on the same plane anymore?
The teleport spell would have been used when the item was first created, which would only allow travel on the same plane.
I'll probably end up ruling that the mirror can't connect to its counterpart whilst on a different plane but thought I'd run it past you lovely folks first.
It would be perfectly reasonable to state that the magic mirror wouldn't work if the other end of the portal is now located on another plane of existence. Original wizard probably never intended for the mirror to leave his tower, so the magical enchantments might not have been created with the power and/or intent to pierce planar boundries. If that's the case, then the mirror would cease to function while in this demiplane.
Additionally, if the mirror is basically mimicing the teleportation spell, then I would say that concept would justify your ruling as well (i.e., destination of the teleport spell must be on the same plane of existence as the castor).

Okay so I may have made a rookie mistake.
