So, I was thinking about buying Dungeon of the Mad Mage because I really like throwing monsters and traps at my players, but I don't want the extra expense of Dragon Heist. Would it be possible to skip over Dragonheist and still retain the lore of the story arc?
I double-checked the introduction pages for Mad Mage (I own it) and really Heist is never mentioned so you are good on that front.
The story hooks to get the players into the game does not contain anything related to Heist so you can run this without having previously run that adventure.
Also, keep in mind that Mad Mage starts players at 5th level and that is where Heist comes as a joining adventure as it takes characters from 1st to 5th.

Okay. Maybe I can do an adventure from Tales of the Yawning Portal to kick start the adventure.

I'm just starting at level 5 and not having people leave the dungeon so I don't need to worry about the Waterdeep setting at all.
