In RoT one of the key events to the forming of the council of waterdeep is the Death of a Masked Lord I'm thinking this Assassination must somehow have prevented any resurrection possibilities as I'm assuming resources and connections would not be an issue for a Masked Lord of Waterdeep.
I'd like to foreshadow the assassination in HotDQ possibly in encrypted messages the adventurers find in Castle Naerytar, Hunting Lodge or Skyreach Castle ie with clues about ritual substances or methods of preventing resurrection and vague hints at the target "AH" for instance
I would very much appreciate any suggestions thoughts as to methods to prevent resurrection that such an assassination could use and I could hint at in notes or something the adventurers find.
“It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt, It lies behind stars and under hills, And empty holes it fills, It comes first and follows after, Ends life, kills laughter.” J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
Thanks for all your replies input I think it's fair to say True Resurrection would be available to a Masked Lord of waterdeep so the key to preventing resurrection as I see it is " soul is free " assuming our late lord of waterdeep was the upstanding sort and didn't have any outstanding fiendish soul bargains which would open another bag of worms... The assassination needs to trap or destroy the soul. At the moment I'm thinking Pantagruel666 plot device suggestion is most applicable. Some sort of Soul Snare, Soul Reaver legendary magic item that is referred to in notes possessing the property of Trapping/Destroying the soul of a being it is used against.

Oddly, True Resurrection needs the original body if it exists; it can only create a new body if the original does not exist.
Pantagruel666 Ooh true true I rather overlooked that caveat that makes hiding the body relevant again... Mmm... As RoT establishes the Masked Lord has been assassinated rather then disappeared it kind of suggests that there was a body... then again if there were witnesses of the assassination and then abduction of the body that would work to... darn going to have to stew over it abit more

Hide the body. Or turn it into a zombie and hide the zombie. Or use a plot device that traps the soul.
Or the person doesn’t want to come back.
Bag of Devouring, Orb of Annihilation, disintegrate the body, feed it to a pet Neo- Otyugh.... I have an extensive list, for reasons..
If the body is actually destroyed true resurrection will do the job. Better to put the body in a secret chest and then end the spell.
That would make it go to the Ethereal Plane? You're looking at the "irretrievably lost" part of the spell? Hmm I will have to put it on my list.
