So my player is going as a divine soul sorc 2 levels and wants to take the rest in celestial warlock, i figured i wantsd to have fun with making a patron for our world we all use as dms who would be an exiled angel that delves inti the arcane arts.
i am thinking if making him more egotistical seeing humans as fickle things that are nonstop entertainment, but due to the origin of his fall he survived a fatal blow from his brother surviving with only a small fragment of himself… his shadow loosing his power and physical form.
so his pact with the warlock will be simply to seek safe haven in the warlocks shadow and such while the warlock slowly gains power, the hidden secret will be that the angel is feeding on the warlocks divine power in his blood and using the warlock to mask his presence while searching for his missing artifacts regaining his former strength. So for a long time he will be appearing as a living shadow.
now i also plan to bring his brother in as his brother tracks his essence down in this crystal sphere and seeks to elemental him once and for all. This will present the warlock with a choice to protect this pact or sacrifice it altering who i make the final antagonist.
the warlocks pact one is cunning, smart, and care free while the brother seeking to kill him is strong, perceptive, and stern.
(Also i plan for the angel to have a secret demi realm of his own with a lot to do with mirrors and perceptive of time for puzzles like one i want the players to solve a riddle to find out they must kill themselves to pass so when they do only their reflection below them on a glass floor dies)
“It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt, It lies behind stars and under hills, And empty holes it fills, It comes first and follows after, Ends life, kills laughter.” J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
The name of the NPC doesn't *have* to directly link to the personality. It feels a lot cooler when it does though.
I might suggest using the naming convention from your current pantheon and pull from that. Pantheons that resemble Greek or Norse mythos might have a Grecian or Norse name. Some of the older, and subjectively darker, names for beings of otherworldly origin come from the Arabian language. It might feel like this NPC has always been part of the world if they are connected to the rest of the pantheon in some way, and don't feel out of place. If your pantheon is based loosely around Shinto or Buddist faith, it could feel akward to have a celestial rolling around named Gadreel.
