I have a druid who just gave all his earning to his elderly mentor so he wouldn't get evicted off the land.
I'm going to have his mentor give him some kind of gift/equipment before he sets out on the road, but I'm having a hard time finding something that fits a level 2 druid.
Any suggestions for a level 2 moon druid that wont compound the issue of moon druids being so unbillable at level 2? Something that adds utility and druid flavor rather than AC/HP or damage?
There are plenty of magic items out there that allow users to cast a low-level utility spell or have some other minor effect. Mask of the Beast, an old Cracked Driftglobe, or Nature's Mantle might all be appropriate
Askatu, hyperfocused vedalken freedom fighter in Wildspace (Zealot barb/Swashbuckler rogue/Battle Master fighter) Green Hill Sunrise, jaded tabaxi mercenary trapped in the Dark Domains (Battle Master fighter) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
A Bag of Tricks has some good flavor for a Druid. A Pearl of Power is also fun. So is a Mask of the Beast for great Druidic flavor. And the Moon Sickle only works for Druids.
I made a couple of items specifically for a druid in one of my campaigns, he seemed to enjoy them. You are free to use them if you like. They are Selune's Gift and Claw of Malar in the homebrew section.
Create a magic item that allows him to use wild shape once more per day and that adds +1 to the final CR rating of the transformed beast once per week. He'll be in beast form more often typical of the class and once per adventure he can be a bit more lethal. If you want to go more thematic, maybe when the moon is full he can add in the +1 to CR for example.
The spell gem (lapis lazuli) is a good low level item that will allow a druid to cast a little more and can be integrated into a keep sake like an amulet.
Druids do not get many cantrips so an item that lets them do a utility cantrip like shape water, mold earth, gust or druid craft will be useful to them
Rather than an extra use of wild shape you might consider giving them a free use of the optional familiar feature of wild shape on an item
Another option is to give a collection scrolls of utility spells for a druid , something like a spell book or sacred text. Having access to high level utility spells as consumables with a chance to fail is fine at level 1. Spells like beast sense, feign death, sky write or even reincarnation which are very situational or sub optimal so are unlikely to be used normally but if you give them in scrolls you add to the chance they might be especially when given early before other options appear. You could also give similar spells from other classes like dream or remove curse.
Or a pair of them. Grow them as a pair of servants akin to Unseen Servant, only they are seen and are shrubs. Could make for some roleplay possibilities, or at least comic relief. Play them as Laurel and Hardy. In fact make that their names.

These are all really good suggestions, I especially like the cantrip one because it makes them feel so much more druidy. I'm probably going to homebrew an item for the druid later on that gives the 4 element cantrips, mold earth, shape water, gust, control flame.
They are just out of level 1 so I end up giving him a ring that can cast animal friendship 1x per day, that can be upgraded to a a ring of animal influence if used enough.
I also gave him an acorn and a pinecone.
I allow druids to have druid craft baseline, so if he reads the spell and figures it out to use the "make seeds sprout" option, they will grow into wood based mithril halfplate and a shield. If he cant figure it out then he getd an acorn and a pinecone. As part of the module they have an item that can cast divination 1x/day, so if one of the puts a little creative problem solving they can easily figure it out.
Aaand, they used divination, to ask if the acorn goes up the butt...

A small stash of potions.
A wand with a few charges in it.

One of my players received a Robe of Useful Items which might be worth checking out.
Pot of awakening.

I made this for a level 3 moon druid. St Bernard (mastiff) was their favourite form to take.
