Anyway just wanted to say thanks for the advice guys, I sorted it out and the player and I came to an agreement were he does let me know though private chat (we play online) as long as we don't metagame each other (which I never intend to).
In case anyone was wondering, ya the players previous DM did some metagaming BS so I can understand why they felt that way at first. But it's good now, I explained I pay attention to monster details like intelligence so I will make my creatures make mistakes according to their intelligence and wisdom .
So we got that worked out. Thanks for all the advice though. It will help down the road for me as a dm
It seems to me that this player has experienced some meta gaming in his playing history and thus is reluctant to reveal info.
I can understand as I have also played with DMs that totally have done this and play the NPCs with knowledge they should not have.
I like the idea of @david42 with writing it down.
Ultimately it will come down to a trust factor. I have since played with many DMs that I totally trust not to meta game.
Didn't think my question would go this far.
