I found it odd that Shield wasn’t an option for the Elf Trance racial feature because it has weapons and tools.
Armor is too broad but Shields would make sense. If you are recalling proficiency from your ancestors then being proficient with a Sword/Spear + Shield would make sense and be thematically great at using both proficiency spots they get.
I’m already sad enough that we don’t have Light/Medium/Heavy shields with correlating proficiencies because a Buckler and Tower Shield are so different. Like you can use them without proficiency and get Move Speed reduction. Medium is halved and Heavy is like 5ft. Where all the current features that say they continue to work while wielding a Shield would be changed to say Light Shield.
Just a thought. I hope the design team is thumbs up on one or both of the ideas but this is just my two cents.

I think it ought to be balanced to select "shields" when you're given proficiency in a martial weapon of your choice. Seems reasonable enough, anyway.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
The ability doesn’t make sense full stop.
