So, I have a problem and I'm hoping so of my esteemed DM luminaries can help.
My group have gone to Krezk, chatted to the Abbot and have decided to go and get his bridal gown for his grisly flesh golem wannabe Strahd bride. They have found out that the closest gown would be in Vallaki. They're on their way there now with one issue: last time they were there they caused a ruckus and got ran out of town. So getting in might be an issue. But this isn't my problem. My problem is getting the bridal gown from the Burgomaster's wife. With their reputation, there is no reasonable reason why the Baroness would hand over the dress. I was planning on Izek escorting them to the burgomaster's house... but for what? The burgomaster would take all their gear and kick them out of town again. That's what happened before and everyone laughed and they connived there way back in, but I fear a repeat of this won't be as fun and it could be a frustrating evening ahead.
Has anyone got any experience of this encounter? What happened in your group?
Or does anyone else have any ideas or hooks for the burgomaster's wife to hand over the dress? It's late and I'm feeling lost on this one.
Doesn't the Krezkov's wife set up a convoy to go to Vallakay? That could provide a level of diplomatic immunity.
The burgomaster of Vallakay also has an enemy in town who could help the group, and a spy that could be utilized for introducing the party to her. I forget her name, but she's super ambitious, pro-Strahd, and quite evil as an individual. Perhaps she'd be willing to help the players, as well as herself, by overthrowing the burgomaster and letting the players take the dress afterwards. That could make some fun rping as the characters will have to make sure she doesn't find out they're against Strahd. Maybe she'd find out, keep using them for her own ends, and then betray them once the burgomaster is disposed. Lots of possibilities.
Barring that, they could always try to steal into the city and steal it.
Argh! That would’ve been great. But I’ve just finished the session and needless to say it was a pretty stressful evening for me!
Because of reasons they couldn’t go with the Baroness Krezkov so I had them search for a secret water logged tunnel (I RPed that it was an old, forgotten wine snuggling tunnel). They encountered a bunch of zombies in the tunnel which was fun and added some threat (character nearly died).
Then Ezmerelda cajoled them into stealing the gown under the cover of night. Ez is pretty stealthy so her and the next stealhiest character did the stealing. They managed to get all the way to the gown when they accidentally knocked the mannequin over disturbing the house. Cur running for their lives with a dog chase, the city guard hunting them and a dwarf bouncing along with a huge bridal gown over her shoulder.
We all breathed a sigh of relief when we reached the ‘safety’ of the tree line and all patted each other’s backs. Phew! Back to Krezk. Thanks for the idea though.
