In the loggers camp, players have found 13 stick figures, one for each of the NPC's that reside/work at the camp. My players saved Tibor Wester and took him back to Phandalin.
They also saved the stick figures. They took the figures back to Phandalin, and are now about to head to Falcon's Lodge (have not been there yet).
I am wondering, as the figurines were meant for the Logger Camp inhabitants, does it not make sense for an Ankheg encounter on the way back through Neverwinter Wood?
They are designed to attract them, so assuming that the ankhegs have been making their way towards the camp, they will follow the figurines wherever they are taken.
Either attack them if they stop for a rest, or the party will lead the ankheg's all the way to Phandalin.
That was my opinion, except that I think the idea might have been that the twigs were specific to the person (PC/NPC). In the woodland manse, there is one for each player.
I wanted to potentially use it, as you said, when they stop to rest. I didn't was to do it though, if other DM's thought it unfair, as I am new and still learning many ropes.
