I love everything CR, except that I am an XP guy, and not really liked the Milestone level advancement. What recommendations would you have to playing this campaign with straight XP gain?
I was thinking accumulating XP through encounters and besting enemies. When the party hits a milestone, I would award them a boon of 25% of the XP needed to reach the level the book awards?
if you're going to fudge the xp with a bonus to keep up with milestones, then why not just do milestones? alternatively you could figure up the XP required for next level and divide it by encounters, giving players a little slice of the pie as they go along. either way, it ends in the same place but with more math than milestones. i don't mean to judge, but why complicate?

unhappy at the way in which we lost individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?

No judging at all. I've always been a numbers and stats kinda guy. Call it preference, I guess.
Thanks for the insight
