So my campaign is with a group of players that are long time friends. I know them all very well, so I felt comfortable doing a campaign where there is a lot of prejudice and stereotypes among the races and the humans/ elves have been in open war in the past, and the state of the world is pushing them towards it again. I have players on both sides of the conflict adn some in the middle. They were all forced together begrudgingly and now are 1 party.
Throughout the campaign they will learn that both sides are right and both sides are wrong. There are big misunderstandings and knowledge lost in ancient times that they will uncover and be able to bring to light. However, getting there will be a lil bumpy if their characters don't trust each other. This was by design, but I want to help them along to seeing that the way their peoples see each other is not exactly right.
I am thinking of having a "The Beach" from ATLA style RP session to help them all get on the same page. For those that are unfamiliar with Avatar, it is an episode in which characters that are related, but have been on opposing sides of a conflict for a long time, sit around a campfire while on vacation and share they feelings. It starts as mocking and fighting and turns in to them understanding each other and becoming closer. The air between them is cleared. I want to do something like this where while traveling through the forest, night creeps up and them and they did not have the opportunity to make camp. They soon stumble upon an old man that has a campfire under the stars in a small clearing in the forest. He will invite them to sit and rest. He will act as a way for me to start conversations for the party to RP together. If they are quiet, he will try to pull info out of them. If they start to argue, he will act as a mediator. Basically, it is a mini group therapy session.
My question is, does anyone have any advice for how to execute this. I am very well aware that this could make things work, but I know my players well enough that I think they will see what I am going for. And they love to RP together. Also any advice on how introduce this encounter in a more naturally flowing way would be nice. Or ideas for characters to use as inspiration for this strange old man. Any input would be appreciated. <3 I am a new DM and still figuring out how to make interesting encounters and I want to avoid everything just sitting there in silence awkwardly.
