Use the spellcasting variant, and select his spells tactically. In a lair, use terrain to his advantage. Make it hard to get close him in melee, or to target for ranged. Let the minions attack first, draw attention, and then launch spell attacks from the drider. Play him as an intelligent creature that wants to win the fight.
Drider + phase spider seems like it might be a little to small of a threat to your party. But maybe that's just me. I'd say use the ceiling. The drider has spider climb, so it can walk around up there without any problems. Have some webs to hinder anyone trying to follow. Have a nice number of stalactites to use as cover. Then, when the party uses Spider Climb on their melee, have the phase spider attack the squishies from stealth.
That feels deadly enough, but still survivable.

I'm probably going to throw in some swarm of spiders or giant spiders also. The party is going to be four fifth level players.
Any ideas on how to make combat interesting?
